Microscopists for PLM and TEM Asbestos Analysis

Position Overview:
Techlaw, Inc. (US-EPA Region 8 ESAT Contract) is seeking applicants to fill 2 full-time entry to mid-level positions as a Polarized Light Microscope (PLM) operator or a PLM/Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) operator at the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) laboratory in Golden, Colorado specializing in asbestos analysis. The positions support the EPA Superfund Program on the Environmental Support and Assistance Team (ESAT) contract. The positions are open immediately.
Responsibilities:
- Receive incoming samples from clients according to sample custody procedures
- Manage samples using Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS)
- Analyze soils and bulk asbestos samples by PLM according to Method EPA/600/R-93/116
- TEM analysts are required to analyze air and bulk samples according to TEM AHERA, ISO 10312 or Chatfield Method
- Persons with both PLM and TEM experience will be expected to split time between the 2 labs based on work load
- Generate Test Reports with the ability to write Case Narratives, including opinions and interpretations where necessary
- Participate in NIST proficiency testing, inter-laboratory studies, and internal quality control analyses
- Review Standard Operating Procedures and all other related documentation, including laboratory-developed methods and modifications to methods at the laboratory
- Help maintain logbooks and other quality assurance documentation
- Other assignments as needed
- Field work with limited travel may be required
Qualifications:
- Minimum of 1 year of laboratory experience as a PLM analyst or PLM/TEM analyst is required
- Bachelors degree in Geology preferred; however, will consider 2+ years PLM or PLM/TEM experience in place of a degree
- Must be familiar with the principles of optical mineralogy and able to measure optical properties
- Must be able to identify the major components of, properly align, and operate the polarized light microscope
- Good oral and written communication skills
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications
- Flexible and able to work well in small groups
- Attention to detail and good laboratory practices are a must
- Experience or formal coursework in electron microscopy is a plus
- 40-hour HAZWOPER Training is a plus
Compensation: Salary is $35,000 - $40,000 USD Annual
