Position Overview:
As an environmental justice organization, RWA is dedicated to including the local community in the planning for, and creation of, a vibrant, accessible and healthy waterfront for all. RWA seeks a talented and self-motivated individual to manage its Environmental Stewardship/ Marine Debris Removal After-School program along the Rockaway shoreline.
This program will require an individual with experience in environmental stewardship and youth development to lead middle/high school students one day/week after school in marine debris removal, identifying indigenous and invasive species of shoreline plants, marine science (oyster gardening) and implementing shoreline restoration along Jamaica Bay.
Coordinator will work after school one day a week with 15 middle school students to identify shoreline habitat, remove invasive species of plants and learn GPS technology to map the area. Will also collaborate with ecologists from Arverne East Development and members of the NYC Parks Dept to develop a strategy and plan for the scope of work to be complete by the students.
Sponsored by the NYC Environmental Fund, this program will serve up to 15 middle/high school age students from local public schools. The Coordinator will be accountable to ensure that the program, meeting one day per week after school, is implemented based upon RWA curriculum, policies, and vision.
Responsibilities:
- Organize, manage and evaluate the Fall After School curriculum.
- Maintain and expand the RWA network of participating students and local schools.
- Participate in NYC and watershed professional organizations.
- Maintain participant and partner databases.
- Design and implement assessment measures to demonstrate program impact on student conservation knowledge.
- Track attendance, performance and behavior through record keeping.
- Write a program narrative report at the conclusion of the program.
- Provide crisis intervention services when necessary.
- Assist in the recruitment of new, and retention of existing students into RWA programs.
- Serve as in-house photographer to document students participation during the program.
5 to 10 hours per week, after school along Arverne area of Rockaway beach, Queens. The program runs from September - December.
Qualifications:
- College degree, preferably in ecology, science, or education.
- Experience with youth development and environmental education/ stewardship.
- Demonstrates strong people skills and excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to multi-task and work independently.
- Excellent organizational and planning skills.
- Ability to work with RWA web programmer to show before and after pictures and articles for presentations on the site to show progression of program for funders.
- Team player with a positive attitude, a sense of humor, and excellent social skills.
- Possesses sensitivity and experience working with ethnically diverse and underserved communities.
- Valid drivers' license.
