Manager Biomass Science and Conversion Technology Department

Position Overview:
The Manager of the Biomass Science and Conversion Technology Department shares responsibility with the Center 8630 leadership team for the continued development of world-class capabilities and impact in biological sciences for Sandia and the Nation.
Responsibilities:
- As one element of this, the successful candidate will be responsible for the continued support and execution of the JBEI technical responsibilities of the department's staff.
- This Manager will also support Sandia's strategic thrust in Biofuels, in partnership with the Senior Manager and the Energy, Climate and Infrastructure Security (ECIS) SMU. This will include a supporting role in the identification and development of significant new biofuel project responsibilities to be supported by key external sponsors.
- The successful candidate will also be responsible for assuring safe, secure and effective operations of the department, and for leading the department in making safety a value by aligning actions, behaviors and attitudes to create a culture where safety is inseparable from mission success.
- The successful candidate will also be responsible for leading the department in continuing to improve the recruitment and career development of a diverse, world-class workforce, and to develop a more inclusive workplace environment.
Qualifications:
Req uired:
- PhD in chemical engineering, biochemical engineering, biology, molecular and cellular biology, biophysics, or a related field.
- Experience in lignocellulose and/or algal biofuel research and development.
- A strong track record of technical achievement and leadership.
- Demonstrated success in developing and/or managing new programs with a range of sponsors.
- Strong interpersonal skills, including excellent written and oral communications and negotiation skills.
- Demonstrated effectiveness in building and leading large interdisciplinary teams or programs.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively coach and mentor employees.
- Ability to develop and implement project management and business plans.
- Ability to demonstrate Sandia values, including attributes described by Full Spectrum Leadership.
Desired:
- Knowledge/experience working with DOE/BER and EERE/OBP.
- Experience working closely with one or more Sandia SMU's.
- Experience working closely with Sandia's Core S&T Capability organizations.
