Clean Energy Advocate

Position Overview: 

VPIRG is looking for an up and coming advocate and policy researcher to join our clean energy team and help drive Vermont's transformation to a clean energy economy. The Clean Energy Advocate will work under the guidance of the Clean Energy Program Director to develop and implement campaigns that will facilitate an aggressive transformation away from fossil fuels in the electricity, transportation and heating sectors.

This is the ideal position for a sharp new advocate looking to join a team with a proven track record of success in helping shape Vermont's clean energy future. The right candidate will have a passion for environmental issues and a sense of how to leverage grassroots activism to achieve legislative and policy change. This is a full-time, exempt position based in Montpelier.

Responsibilities:

  • Policy Development: Help develop VPIRG's position on clean energy policies by contributing research, policy analysis and clear, pragmatic thinking and writing.
  • Campaign Strategy and Planning: Help move VPIRG's clean energy program forward by developing and implementing strategies to gain political support for our agenda using tactics such as research, coalition-building, grassroots organizing, media publicity, endorsements and message development.
  • Advocacy: Bring problems and compelling solutions to the attention of Vermont legislators, members of the Executive branch, environmental agency staff, local and federal officials and business leaders. Develop materials, build relationships and enhance VPIRG's reputation among decision makers.
  • Media Outreach: Serve as a public spokesperson for the organization by building relationships with media, conducting successful media events, using social media to promote our work and maximizing earned media opportunities.
  • Public Outreach: Work with our organizing staff to leverage VPIRG's online action network and mobilize our extensive grassroots membership base to generate public action on key issues. Organize and facilitate public events to raise awareness and garner support for campaigns.
  • Coalition Building: Create and sustain partnerships with allied organizations.
  • Fundraising: Assist in fundraising, all staff members participate in various aspects of fundraising including grant writing and in-person member meetings.

Qualifications:

At least 2 years of relevant experience, ideally with issue-based campaigns and/or grassroots organizing. Must be politically savvy, have persuasive written and oral advocacy skills, and possess the ability to express complex technical data in an easily accessible and engaging manner. The right candidate is results-oriented, with strong analytical and quantitative skills.

Candidates must be able to travel (within state) and work evening/weekend hours as necessary. Commitment to VPIRG's issues and a mission-driven approach are essential in this demanding and highly-professional work environment.

Compensation: Competitive salary. VPIRG offers an excellent benefits package including employer-paid health insurance including vision and dental, long-term disability insurance, employer-matching IRA contributions and six weeks annual leave.
